NUDDA

Nudda is the brainchild of Antonio Faedda. Antonio has  a 1st class martial arts pedigree, having trained at Guru Bob Breen's academy before meeting and studying directly under Guru Terry Barnett. Antonio credits much of his development to Terry, particularly the kali influence of his style.

Maestro Faedda, who also studied/trained and has a great love of western boxing, has taken these concepts and moulded them into his own style. The Maestro describes Nudda as the "Unlimited striking art" - essentially "outstanding boxing supercharged with kali/panantukan/dirtyboxing/limb destructions/insertions."

Nudda also incorporates stick and knife work, thai boxing and grappling in the form of Luta livra - which to my understanding is similar to BJJ and wrestling, but with a twist.

Having attended some of Antonio's seminars in Essex and Leicester, I am particularly impressed in his eye for detail. Like any great teacher, he is able to identify subtle ways in which to transform your technique and make it more effective. What I particularly enjoy about his teaching style is his ability to develop an overall strategy.. skills not techniques... which allows you to take the thinking our of what you are doing. This really does help you to explore techniques and express yourself, first in conditioned sparring and then more free flowing sessions.

I have been impressed with what I have learned in these sessions and have been able to use them to compliment my own training. I am looking forward to attending many more Nudda seminars in the near future.

Nudda Seminar Essex:

General tips:

1) Control range - at long range partner can only use jab and cross!
2) Set them up - get their hands where you want them e-g up so you can use insertions or body shots
3) Body positioning - use your hips to help position you e.g. line up your left hip with there left hip or right with right etc.. this can help you avoid being square on right in front of partner!

Techniques:

Lead and rear hand "defang snake/elbow destructions:

place elbow in front of face, tuck jaw inside shoulder, elbow high in line with shoulder, the hand on opposite side of head e.g. left elbow in front of face and the hand on top of your head towards the right hand side. Free hand in guard up high. - this is a long range defence moving backward as partner strikes and "digging in elbow" to damage hand (also handy in a defence against clinch!)

Follow up with: hammer fist "pak" on attacking limb, insertion (hammer first type strike to neck to control partner/distance. As you do this be slightly off line and up on your toes with extended arm (slightly bent but not too much you want to feel the tension) - then cross hook cross or rear elbow lead elbow etc

Drill this on pads: A does a jab, cross or jab cross, B responds by hitting you with pad (either hand) A defends with elbow destruction and follow up

Defence on head hook and body hook (when attacker in close)

Low hook spear defence:

A) Right body hook by partner
B) Roll defence, elbow in close to side of your body, hips up, tense abs, tuck head in (left arm) - then use right arm/elbow to spear/stab into partners shoulder/head/ wherever it lands - aim this at the arm they are using to hit with e.g. their right arm so your elbow is going across your body. - follow up with insertion (with lead hand), cross hook cross combo

When blocking left body shot same as above (but reversed).

Insertion can also be done with rear hand and will involve change into right lead (from orthodox stance)

High hook defence:

A) throws right head hook (usually as part of a combo)
B) Driving elbow to get inside the arc of the hook they through right hook you drive with your left elbow to thei right shoulder) - use  your free hand to control their free hand - Follow up with with lead hand insertion into cross hook cross

When blocking left head hook same as above but reverse

Drill: using these defuses against following combos (in close)

Low left, high right
Low right, low right, high left
close range body hook "sparring"

Nudda Seminar Leister: X guard (early 2017)

Long range so only jab, cross to deal with

1) Slip jab (stepping off laterally) keep circling away/l step. - Slip Cross (step laterally with lead leg) and pivot (dig lead foot into floor)

Play with catch/parry/slip jab and slip cross/pivot - returning jab cross as you like

2) Slip jab ( rear foot lateral slight fwd 45), opponent crosses, shoulder roll lean back (may have to adjust rear foot slightly/rock back) then pivot (rear foot moves round behind lead leg) and return jab

Slip cross (lead foot lateral slight fwd 45) opponent hooks - bob and weave return cross move out.

3) Elbow destructions (as Essex seminar) elbow destruction (lead hand), hammer pak, insertion, cross hook cross

Off Jab

Off jab then elbow destruction but they follow up with cross so you go into shoulder roll as described above

Off jab then elbow destruction they follow u with cross and you inside sweep into clinch, elbow

Off jab then elbow destruction they follow with cross you drive inside with elbow spear, clinch elbow

As above but after elbow spear insertion with rear hand stepping forward into opposite stance push back and cross hook cross

4) Off cross elbow destruction uses your rear hand and when doing the hammer/insertion you need to step through into opposite stance before following up.

5) Spear (in close defence against hooks as per Essex seminar)

6) Double pillar/crash guard (like boxing cover up)

Head down shoulder up both forearms in front of head, right hand on top of left - no gap between arms

Use this guard to crash into - driving forward, follow by using right hand to hammer pak/waslik lead arm, insertion cross hook cross etc (Off of jab) can also combine with all drills above for a flow

Off a cross you hammer pak onto crossing arm if you are outside the arm go onto a clinch, Elbow - if you are inside the arm got into an insertion, cross hook cross

WARNING: while doing hammer cover your face with your elbow/left arm in case of follow up.. which leads to...

7) Cross guard

working off the same principle as the double pillar -  elbow in front of face (horizontal and on shoulder, other hand in a thai wing guard (blocking hooks)

can be formed and used straight away to crash in or after a double pillar as you go to pak a hook is coming so you cover the hook and you find yourself in the cross guard.

this can be followed up by the same hammer fist, lead hand insertion, cross hook cross combo as before and like all previous guards can combine to the various flows outlined earlier

(The hammer fist insertion motion is identical to the odd series flow from double stick!)

Again notes are one thing but you need to experience it

Boxing and Muay Thai Sparring seminar Nov 2017

The focus of the weekend was the importance of having a strategy when doing any type of sparring, as it is too easy to get caught up in the chaos and then panic and not do anything. Throughout each day we worked on several drills and then focused on implementing then within the sparring.

Boxing:

Shadow boxing warm up: lots of footwork, body mechanics etc also looked at being able to switch stance to help play with angles - one particular combo was: Using the jab to make a connection against lead arm, then stepping back and throwing a lead hook (right hook as now in right lead) and the following up form that stance (opponent walks onto the hook)

Drills: (all broken down and drilled a lot)

Hit hands: this keeps the guard busy and helps you dictate where they will have their guard. You aren't just head hunting. This has two effects it traps the hands and it opens them up. E.g:- after jabbing the lead hand you jab the rear hand which usually catches the jab, put it in with penetration to force it wide, then immediately step off lateral 45 and follow up with a cross to the face which is now open (we practiced by hitting gloves to start)

We added to this - after you threw a cross, partner throws a hook and you bob and weave moving to the other side as you do and then cross hook

An alternative combo: After the step of 45 and cross, you immediately follow up with a  hook (stepping back over to the other side as you throw it), uppercut, the step 45/pivot again, control their rear  arm with hand/forearm and cross

Body shot to open angels: Right cross to body (put it in but its a feint). As the block this and slightly pivot you step off right lateral 45 and use your forearm to wedge/trap their lead arm (keep it out a little so you don't jam yourself up) then throw an overhand right to head.

If you do this and they adjust before you can hit, step off 45 lateral the other way (left) to cut them off and wedge/trap their arm with your other forearm. You can then bump them off uppercut and right hook. step off 45 again (right) control rear shoulder with your lead hand (or neck) and cross

Sparring:

Big gloves Gum shields: sparring but trying to utilise some of these methods as a strategy (the more experienced people were the more options they had to play with, but we were all trying to use these strategies amongst the boxing. We were not trying to take each others heads off! Solid shots were landed, a very good test, lots of feedback for everyone (every one punched everyone no one got away without getting hit a few times) about 7 x 3 min rounds

Muay Thai:

General tips: If they are punching then the legs are open, if they are kicking then the top half is open (ish)

Drills/Strategies for use when defending from kicks:

Off rear round kick (low line):

1) instead of tacking the shot on the side of your leg, turn your leg to face out 45, tense the muscle, step out (stopping the kick before it reaches max velocity) and "block/jam" jam the kick. this has made you step off 45 and leaves you able to fire a cross at an angle straight through the guard., then move back the other way as you throw a hook and rear round kick (as a drill when you throw the final rear round kick your partner also practices their defence by blocking your round kick)

2) as they go to kick you do a lead leg teep and follow with a round kick (low line) which then loops into the above drill (combine the 2)

3) Crush/Check the kick and then go into a lead kick (same leg you blocked with) to the inside of their thigh. Do a small stutter step not a full switch kick as this can take too long. Partner blocks the inside thigh kick by turning lead leg in towards the kick

4) Same as above but when kicking inside thigh partner moves their lead leg back so you miss the kick, they then immediately return a round kick with the leg they just moved (high line kick)

We then drilled these in any order (one person feeding for a few mins then swapping round)

After this we incorporated these strategies into sparring 3 x 3 min rounds swapping partners

Catching leg drills:

1) off Mid line round kick: scoop catch rear round kick (moving away form kick as you do), pass the leg across your body lifting heel up, throw leg away and round kick with rear leg (high line)

Or pass across body, grab back of head and pull it down while kicking standing leg away.

2) Catch teep: get body out of the way, one hand under one hand on top and pull in and you catch pass it to the left of your body, step forward and grab/hammer fist or drive elbow to neck, pull head down and kick standing leg away form them.

3) as above, pass leg to left side of your body, step forward and drive in elbow, then twist body, holding leg with the am you jest elbowed with and do a spinning elbow to head with other arm.

Nudda insertions: (adding panantukan to the mix:  applied through yesterdays strategies of hitting the arms as well to make a connection)

1) Waslik to lead hand (stepping off line and up on toes), and jam their rear hand by pushing forward and wedging in between thumb and fore finger. Then shift in and use lead arm to elbow anywhere between head/neck and bicep (follow with ABC)

2) As above but use hand that jams partners rear arm to slap/graze eye and turn head. as you do you step off lateral 45 and hammerfist / insertion (full extension) then ABC (high/low lines etc)

3) whip both hands down (drop your weight) and double pillar crash in driving with elbows into chest., right hand does a one arm clinch then elbow with other arm, step of lateral 45, hanmmerfist/insertion into ABC

4) Hammer fist to lead arm (prtect face with other arm elbow) stepping off lateral 45 on toes as you do and follow up with hammerfist/insertion, into lead elbow hit, into ABC

at any time if partner moves you can cut across the body like will drilled in the boxing section from pervious day.

Muay Thai and Boxing sparring and Kaliradman seminar (NOV 2018)

Day 2 Kali

Footwork:

In Pairs

1) Step 45 left, touch fingertips, keep contact, back to center (still in contact) then step 45 right

2)As above but stepping left with your right foot, then stepping right with your left foot.

Adding double stick.

tip of sticks always pointing at partner, not over shoulder!
range - long long range and cutting all the way through not a watik

When doing A1 and A2 strike off sam hand the other hand weapon still points at partner and the striking stick will usually go under this stick as it follows through

1) stepping 45 left A1 and A2 with right hand but keep sticking in contact on the middle as you come back and then step off to the right and then A1 and A2 with left hand.

2) same as above but adding alternative footwork (step left with right foot and step right with left foot.

3) combine the two foot work patterns one after the other

4) step left with right foot hit A1, turn body to face other direction, back hand with left hand stick, turn back to face original direction and hit  back hand with right hand stick, then back to centre and repeat the other side.

5) full spin - step left with righ foot hit A1, turn body to face other direction, back hand with left hand stick, step back with your lead leg yo an open/square stance and follow through with and A1 and A2 with your right hand stick. You now step off to the right hand stide (with your left leg) and repeat.

Single stick striking:

tips. When using the weapon use it's full length, if you "tie up" you've made a mistake!. Focus is on not being hit... you get hit with a weapon you are dead. The strikes are generally to cu through not so much a watik. angles are created through movement not just using the stick at an angle.

1) A1 strikes to partners head (vey tight angle cutting them from neck to foot. - partner must move back (inc getting leg out of the way) staying in right lead - raise left and stick up to block as a back up. reply with A1 moving forward and partner defends - repeat

2) as above but occasionally, block and strike with the left hand in reply

3) horizontal strike to head - Duck (from knees), follow up with back hand and lower leg - jump over in lifting legs high, and as you come down strike the head - the attacker, while still low, needs to lift a hand up to "block" and respond with a stabbing motion

stick sparring with noodles!

Brief look at some striking angles to flow with, and recap of movement.

every time you get hit you "die" (but you keep going for the round)

movement and feint, high and low attacks and from different angles, keep at range, stick pointing at partner most of the time (slightly different approach to Bobs - much more movement?)

Knife work

Knife is a piston, thrusting and stabbing mainly - keep knife pointed at partner (use finger along blade to help with the pointing/stabbing motion). keep other hand up tight against chest (protect heart) and slightly across neck to protect artery.

Again footwork is key (as above).. keep and range and if you get hit your dead mentality.

Drills:

1) Stab to eyes (bling/block view make them flinch), as they flich etc, slice down and cut hand - reach form where you are don't step!

2) stab to hand - as they retract hand step forward and  stab to body and them get out fast.

3) stab up at hand, whether you hit it or they move it keep going through, as they flinch launch fwd 45 and slice at neck, use free hand to control knife arm and then stab to ribs, or control their free elbow pushing them a little off balance and stab to ribs.

4) stab to eyes, as they flinch, lead leg slight step wi the side and ten pivot (leading wit rear leg) off line and stab (or hooking motion) into neck) - this works well as they tend to flinch and then respond and you are moving of line essentially slipping their response!

Knife sparring

again focus on movement and feints, pointing forward and utilising the combo's we used above. everyone focused on keeping range so challenging to land but better safe than sorry with "knife fighting"

Knife flows:

1) stab to belly - parry (palm in) and reply (loop cycle)
2) stab to belly - outside forarm/blade of forearm/outside of hand - chopping down and out and you are moving inside line and then reply with stab to belly (loop cycle)

combine the two into a flow

3) stab to head (thrust) - parry palm in

flow with all combo - belly, parry, belly, parry, belly insidee deflect, belly, inside defect, head, parry, head, parry.

Add to flow - when ou head stab is parried you can reach under or over your stabing arm to control their elbow and then stab under ribs (which they can then parry using the arm you have moved out the way if your grip isn't firm)

Knife disarms

from stab to belly

1) parry and grab wrist, then whip it out (outside line) and step off line as you do (away form other hand) . push motion with the hand grabbing the wrist and use your other hand coming up under their arm, just behind their elbow, and pull with that hand while you push with the other for a wrench.

2) Parry and grab wrist, then swap hands grabbing the wrist as you do punch over into arm bar ( cup the hand holding their wrist, squeeze the arm with your arm, armpit above their elbow) go into arm break, if that doesn't work you can go down into a squatting position and rest their arm under your belly and on your legs for an arm break

3) Parry into dumog drag into over shoulder arm break (sandwich grip the hand)

from grabbing your wrist

1) grab their forearm and wrench it towards you while simultaneous stabbing forward
