Terry Barnett Seminars

Old notes from old seminars:

Terry Barnet is  full instructor under Guru Dan Inosanto. One of only 5 in the UK. A student of Bob Breen's and an inspirational figure to all who have trained with him. Terry is one of Steve's main instructors (aside from guru Bob), A truly humble man who loves martial arts. His style of teaching is easy to access. In every seminar I have attended he has taken some basic principles and then continued to develop them adding variations and application catering for all abilities in the room.

Note: I have attended many seminars that Terry has taken but my note taking was not as consistent. these are just a few of the quick notes that I have taken during recent seminars. As I attend more I will update with more detailed information.

2016

Punching hubud: (including changing leads)

punch comes, you parry, salute, pak the arm and punch back (in a loop flow)

1) scoop the punching hand, wait for punch to come from other hand then carry on with basic punch hubud drill but on other side (Parry, salute, pak punch)

2) Elbow destruction, hammer fist (which is bloced), wedge the blocking hand (which is like a strike to the eyes), pak and punch (now in other lead)

3) Inside parry (roll around punching hand), inside gunting (hit bicep), hammerfist (the motion is like heaven 6 form stick work) they block the hammer fist so you wedge, pak and punch as above.

4) As above but inside parry then straight to hammer fist with same hand.

5) scissor gunting (parry outside and simultaneous bicep strike on inside)

6) duck and low line hit to stomach, then pak the punching hand out the way, hammer fist, wegde, pak, punch

2017:

Boxing:

Guard/hands by eyebrows - block your own vision an use lateral movement

Catch jab drills (aim for face not glove - keep it honest)

Catch the jab
Catch jab and cross with same glove
Catch jab and cross and cover for hook

add pressure by doing the various catches and playing piggy in the middle. a second attacker stand behind the first attacker and slowly moves round to try and move toward the defender. the defender need to defend the attacks but be aware of the moving person and keep adjusting position.

Defences off jab:

1) Catch
2) Skip/switch step to move on the outside line and simultaneous split entry punch (keep circling after hit)
3) Step off left 45 (on inside line watch out for their cross and try and line up you right hip with their left hip) as you step you throw a cross

Defences off of cross:

1) Catch
2) slip left (outside cross, split entry cross and pivot away
3) Slip left DEEP,(lining up hips again and driving you rear elbow towards their hip/belly), then - lead hook body, head and pivot away

Tip: Keep non punching hand UP on chin or in front of face for protection

We then drill these in various orders, randomly against a mixture of partners

Double stick:

Heaven, standard and earth drills

1) Heaven with one partner using one stick -  right hand x 3, left hand x 3
2) Heaven - standing, one knee, both knees, on floor, circle on floor, up to both knees, one knee, standing.
3) Double Stick 5 count sambrada and guntin version.

2019:

Defences off jab: (to close range) - all jabs and crosses should be close enough that you have a bend in your arm, of you are fully extended you are too far away and not enough power)

1) Hard parry, return jab (parry to get off line, fill the space moving forward to jab, tip - parry the jab as if guiding under your arm pit) - work best on hard committed jabs.

2) Parry inside the jab and step off line to throw a cross down the middle. (again step off line and drive forward to close distance)

3) switch step to outside line and jab/split entry follow by ABC and circling around

Defences off Cross:

1) catch jab and cut punch
2) shift off line outside and split entry
3) slip/Shift off line, lower base and driving elbow into ribs, then fire body and head hook (ala Mike Tyson)

Close in boxing:

left shoulder to left and right to right

1) bump of (like throwing a jab/cross depending on left or right shoulder forward) fill space asap with uppercut and hook)
2) step back (rock back with heel) and fill space with uppercut and hook

Stick and knife:

Warm up: 5 count guntings (open and closed) with a follow up waslik after each gunting (stopping with stick and passing with knife)

Off angle 1 feed:

1) inside sweep, check hand with knife, cut through body with stick - partner then stabs, inside sweep motion, check hand with knife follow up with ABC

2) As above but if the stab comes a little quicker keep stick pointing down.

3) inside sweep, check hand with knife - partner stabs much faster -  check hand with knife (cat stance), hit arm with stick and stab chest, knife hand scoops outside arm to stab under armpit/ribs, cut wrist with stick on way past and then hit stick on tricep to keep pressure on then remove knife and follow up with ABC

4) As above but the stab is low so simultaneous pass the knife arm with knife and cut the arm with stick (gunting before trapping tricep and the same follow up

5) AS above but stab is high so roof block and pass then tricep trap and ABC
